SPIRITUAL SANCTITIES:
The Benedictine Abbey of Melk is one of the greatest spiritual and cultural
sanctuaries in Austria and all of Europe. Melk is famous worldwide for Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery overlooking the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Benedictines are one of the oldest Catholic monastic orders in Europe, founded by Saint Benedict of Nursia in the sixth century. His "Rule of Saint Benedict" became the foundation of monastic life for thousands of monks and nuns around the world. The order played a key role in the development of education, science, culture, and spirituality. The core values
of the Benedictines are concentrated in three key principles:
• Ora et labora ("Pray and work") – harmony between spiritual prayer and
daily work.
• Stabilitas loci ("Stability of place") – fidelity to one monastery and one's community.
• Oboedientia ("Obedience") – obedience to God and the abbots of the order. Significance for Pilgrims
For pilgrims, Melk Abbey is a place of profound spiritual power: here one can experience silence
and concentration within the walls where prayer has taken place for over 900 years.
